I was recently studying a new book.

I used to just read books but I find studying them better.

It's called ‘The Advantage’ by Patrick Lencioni; I enjoyed it immensely.

On page 65 Lencioni begins to talk about Behaviour 5: Focusing on results, which is part of Discipline 1: Build a Cohesive Leadership Team.

On page 65 he writes “but there is no getting around the fact that the only measure of a great team  - or a great organisation - is whether it accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish.”

He then continues on the same page with “if the organisation it leads rarely achieves its goals, then by definition, it’s simply not a good team.”

I love the simplicity of these extracts.

I often see time and time again organisations and teams making things far more complex than they need to be.

If your team achieves what it sets out to achieve it is a good team.  If it does not then you may have tried hard, but that’s not a good team.

I always aim to get our software and consultancy customers to focus on the results.

It’s always about the results.

Lencioni then writes something that I think is beautiful, “when it comes to how a cohesive team measures its performance, one criterion sets it apart from noncohesive ones: its goals are shared across the entire team.

Now this may sound simple enough but it is not that easy to achieve.

Firstly, many people in the leadership and management teams look out for themselves.

They are very concerned with how their business unit or department operates and the results it produces itself rather than looking at the whole picture.

Secondly, it takes a lot of work for the senior leadership team led by the CEO to feel confident to share the main company objectives and goals.  After all if we share them and then don’t achieve, then we can look a little silly.

BUT for the organisation that prioritises this sharing of goals across the entire team...

...the results are fantastic.

Everyone understands the role they have to play in helping the company achieve its goals.

Everyone understands what is important to the whole company rather than just their area of direct control.

Everyone can see how the company needs every single member of the team to take a shared responsibility for the company achieving what it sets out to achieve.

So the question then becomes how do you find a way to share the goals across the entire team?

Plus once you have shared them, how then to enable your team to see in a matter of seconds if they are winning or not?

You could share your goals on the shared company drive and then update them as you are progress.

You could shoot a short video each week and share it with everyone.

You could shape your appraisal system, which hopefully is more frequent than just once per year to share the goals then.

Your challenge is to find a way that you can sustain so that the culture within your business is ‘inside this business we get stuff done and we execute.’  Not ‘inside this business we sometimes set goals and then update you on how we’re doing from time to time.’

Reclaro was built to help achieve this very thing.

Enabling the CEO to have a central 1-3-5 Action Plan that anyone can click into in a matter of seconds and see how the company Vision, Core Objectives and Goals are progressing.

It’s all about building one team with one vision and having everyone aligned.
